Liberia International Airport is one of the four international airports in Costa Rica. It is also known as the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport and is located in the city of Liberia in Guanacaste Province. It is named for the former president of Costa Rica who led the country from 1974-78. The airport has seen substantial investment in recent years including increasing capacity from five to eight planes and the addition of a parallel taxiway.
Liberia Airport, Costa Rica, is a top tourism hub for the region with routes coming into the airport from many international locations. These currently include US cities such as New York, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles and Houston as well as Canadian routes from Toronto. Flights can even take you directly to London Gatwick in addition to other regional center such as San Jose, San Salvador and Panama City.
Transfer options
Costa Rica’s Department of Transportation has strict rules about Liberia airport transportation into the city and means you need to book Liberia airport transfer ahead of travelling. There are two main public transport options – the Liberia Airport shuttle service and the Public Transportation Buses.
Shuttles can take you to a specific destination in the city such as any of the main hotels – JW Marriott Guanacaste, Westin Playa Conchal, RIU Guanacaste Hotel, Secrets Papagayo Resort or Dreams Las Mareas. Shuttles go directly to your destination without stops unless you request them.
Buses run every hour on the hour between 5am and 9pm. Buses are the cheapest option, but seats are not guaranteed, and they take longer than a direct shuttle. There is also no guarantee that they will drop off near your hotel, so you may have to walk from the bus stop to where you are staying.
It is also possible to rent a car at the airport with the major car rental companies such as Avis and Budget having a presence there. You can wait to book on arrival, but it is recommended to book ahead, especially in busy times!!
