About This Tour

The Balsa River Rafting tour is a fun La Fortuna rafting tour designed for families, first-time rafters and travelers looking for a scenic Class II–III whitewater rafting experience near Arenal.

Your experience begins with pickup from selected hotels or vacation rentals in the La Fortuna and Arenal area. Travel to the Maquique Adventure rafting base, located near the Balsa River and approximately 15 minutes from La Fortuna.

Upon arrival, the professional river guides will welcome the group, provide the required rafting equipment and explain the safety procedures. Each participant receives a helmet, life jacket and paddle before the group is divided into rafts.

The rafting route covers approximately 10 kilometers of the Balsa River and usually includes around two hours on the water. The river combines exciting Class II and III rapids with calmer sections surrounded by tropical vegetation and rainforest scenery.

During the tour, guests paddle through fun waves and natural river channels while following the guide’s instructions. Along the way, there may be opportunities to observe birds, monkeys or other wildlife near the riverbanks, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

A fresh tropical fruit break is included during the experience, giving guests time to rest, swim when conditions permit and enjoy the natural surroundings.

After completing the rafting section, return to the base or selected lunch location for a traditional Costa Rican meal. Once the tour is complete, transportation is provided back to your hotel in the La Fortuna or Arenal area.

This tour is recommended for active beginners, families with children who meet the minimum age, couples and groups looking for a safe, scenic and exciting whitewater rafting experience.
