Not sure which route to take?
Choose the Lake Arenal route for the most efficient scenic drive. Choose the Río Celeste route if you want to turn your travel day into an adventure.
Route 1
Tamarindo to La Fortuna via Lake Arenal
The classic route is the best all-around choice for travelers who want a scenic drive without turning the transfer into an entire sightseeing day.
Tamarindo to Cañas
Leave Tamarindo and travel inland through Guanacaste toward the Inter-American Highway. Cañas is the first practical stop for fuel, restrooms, snacks or an early lunch before beginning the mountain section of the journey.
Cañas to Tilarán
From Cañas, the route begins climbing toward the Tilarán highlands. The landscape gradually changes from the warmer, drier Guanacaste lowlands to greener mountain countryside. Expect hills and curves as you approach Tilarán.
Stop in Tilarán
Tilarán is a convenient place for coffee, a local meal or a short break before continuing toward Lake Arenal. It is also a useful stop if you want to stretch your legs before the more winding section of the drive.
Tilarán to Nuevo Arenal
Continue east toward Nuevo Arenal as the road crosses rolling countryside near Lake Arenal. The route becomes increasingly scenic and winding, so travel speeds are generally slower than the distance on the map may suggest.
Lunch in Nuevo Arenal
Nuevo Arenal is one of the best places to take a longer break. The town offers local restaurants and cafés and makes an easy stopping point before continuing around Lake Arenal toward La Fortuna.
Driving Around Lake Arenal
The final portion of the journey follows the northern side of Lake Arenal. This is one of the most scenic sections of the drive, with tropical vegetation, lake scenery and, when weather conditions allow, views toward Arenal Volcano National Park.
The main road is paved but curvy, so travelers should allow plenty of time and avoid judging the drive only by the remaining distance.
Route 2
Tamarindo to La Fortuna via Río Celeste
This route is ideal when the journey itself is part of the vacation and you have enough time for a major nature stop.
Cañas to Bijagua
Instead of continuing toward Tilarán, travel toward Bijagua as the landscape becomes progressively greener near the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanic areas.
Stop in Bijagua
Bijagua is a small rural community and the main gateway to the Río Celeste and Tenorio Volcano region. It is a convenient place for lunch, coffee or a short wildlife experience.
Visit Río Celeste
Río Celeste is the main reason to choose this route. Travelers planning to enter Tenorio Volcano National Park should treat the visit as a major activity rather than a quick roadside stop.
If you prefer to explore the area as a dedicated excursion, see our Río Celeste Waterfall Tour, which can be considered separately from the direct transfer route.
Leave Tamarindo early if you want enough time for the hike, lunch and the remaining drive to La Fortuna.
Río Celeste to La Fortuna
After visiting the Río Celeste area, continue through rural northern Costa Rica toward La Fortuna. The landscape changes again as the route moves toward the rainforest and volcanic scenery of the Arenal region.
