Escape the hustle and bustle of La Fortuna and embark on a scenic drive through the Costa Rican countryside to one of the most secluded and ecologically significant areas in the country, Caño Negro. Located along the Rio Frio, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge spans a vast 10,000 hectares and is home to an array of stunning wildlife, particularly birds.
Caño Negro is a haven for birdwatchers, with the opportunity to spot the majestic Jabiru Stork, the tallest flying bird in Central and South America, as well as wood storks, cormorants, and other avian species. In addition to birds, the area is also known for its sloths, howler monkeys, and mini-crocodiles, known as caimans.
The journey from La Fortuna to Caño Negro takes about 1.5 hours, and upon arrival, you’ll board a comfortable boat with a covered top for shade, along with your nature guide at the Los Chiles dock. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, and your camera and binoculars for this 2-hour boat ride along the edge of the Caño Negro Wildlife refuge on Rio Frio. You’ll even have the chance for a photo op at the border of Costa Rica’s northern neighbor, Nicaragua.
During the tour, we’ll make a pit stop to stretch our legs and enjoy a delicious picnic by the riverside, surrounded by the lush greenery that lines the river. Once back on the boat, we’ll head back to the Los Chiles dock and then return to La Fortuna. This tour is a must-do for nature lovers and birdwatchers, leaving you with unforgettable memories and stunning photos to share with friends and family.
Please note that a passport or a copy of your passport and Costa Rica entrance stamp is required for the tour.
