About This Tour
The Rincon de la Vieja National Park and Oropendola Waterfall Tour combines volcanic activity, tropical forest and a refreshing waterfall experience during a private full-day excursion from Guanacaste.
Your day begins with pickup from your hotel, resort or vacation rental in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Travel through the Guanacaste countryside toward the Las Pailas Sector of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, one of the region’s most important protected volcanic areas.
After arriving at the park, your bilingual nature guide will lead you along the Las Pailas loop trail. This approximately 3.5-kilometer route crosses tropical dry forest and passes several geothermal attractions created by the active volcanic system.
Along the trail, you may observe steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, volcanic vents and mineral-rich water. Your guide will explain the geology of the area and help identify plants, birds and wildlife encountered during the hike. Wildlife sightings are possible but cannot be guaranteed.
After completing the national park hike, continue to La Oropéndola Waterfall. A short nature trail leads through the Río Blanco Canyon to a 25-meter waterfall that drops into a turquoise natural pool surrounded by volcanic rock and forest.
When weather and local conditions permit, there will be time for a refreshing swim. After visiting the waterfall, enjoy an included Costa Rican lunch at Hacienda Guachipelín before beginning the private return trip to your accommodation.
Guests may also add the Río Negro Hot Springs and volcanic mud bath for an additional charge when availability and timing permit. This optional activity is not included in the standard tour price.
